Imagine if Taylor Swift and other celebrities with cult-like followings mobilised their fan bases to actively combat climate change.
With tens of millions of dedicated followers, musicians and celebrities could channel fan passion into climate action and tackle global emissions in ways both big and small.
Taylor Swift, for example, could rehabilitate her climate image by offering exclusive events, prizes and experiences to her fan base that engage in sustainability initiatives.

Fans could sign up to an app where their contribution to sustainability is verified, which would then give them priority access to new song releases and tickets for future tours.
And she could host two annual exclusive eVIP concerts, one for the 100 young fans doing the most to solve climate change, and one for the the 50 greatest global innovators in climate change as well, with winners allowed to bring their friends and families to the concert.
The combination of small actions taken by her tens of millions of fans and the incentives and publicity for major efforts and innovations delivered by a smaller group could lead to reductions of hundreds of millions of tonnes of annual carbon emissions.
Instead of trying to spray Taylor Swift’s plane with orange paint, let’s work with her and let her show the power of her Swifties following to deliver change.
In that way, she might in future change her lyrics to ‘It’s me, hi, I’m the solution it’s me.’
